Durafirm diving board stands have different handrail configurations to choose from except the 3M stand which comes only with the safest option: Handrails on both sides.
We no longer offer a 1M stand without handrails. It is an OSHA requirement that any "walkway" elevated such that 3 steps ("risers") are required to ascend to the walkway must have support railing on that elevated walkway.
The short stand that we offer without handrails is designed to be mounted on the customers' pedestal or platform which is to be constructed by a licensed contractor who will design and build support rails into/onto the pedestal or platform.
The majority of our customers select the stand models having handrails on both sides. The top (curved) rail is approximately 36" above the diving board when installed, with the intermediate rail at about 18" above the board. This is the obvious choice for facilities where children may use the diving board. Even at Universities, where the presence of children is infrequent, the handrails on both sides is the preferred choice.
After doing an ergonomic study of the top curved rail, Duraflex changed the angle for ease of use. At the same time, we discontinued the single handrail option because the curved single rail is lower, so that changing the curve does not yield the same benefit.
We can provide handrails for only one side of the 1M stand or short stand if requested. A side-mount diving board, for pools that do not have sufficient deck space behind the board, should use our short stand mounted on concrete pedestals constructed by a licensed contractor who must build the side mount stairs into the rear concrete pedestal.
