The coating on your Durafirm stand is an epoxy powder coating that we applied to an aluminum titanium conversion coating on aluminum casting alloy 356. The powder coating technique allows good coverage without drips or runs. Once a part is coated, it will not readily take on another coating with powder because it is an electrostatic method, and the coated part is not a good conductor of electric current.
We only provide liquid touch-up paint for coating small areas where corrosion has started. The corrosion and any blisters where corrosion has undermined the surrounding epoxy must first be removed completely to bare, shiny aluminum. Protect hinges, tracks, and fulcrum parts by masking off & covering completely with double layers of good masking tape. For removing the corrosion and blisters, you can use scrapers, wire brush, sandpaper, or light sandblast.
Do NOT try to remove the original coating where it still adheres. You can sand the original coating to rough it up and to remove oxidation where you wish to paint over it; or do a light sandblast of the still-adhering epoxy (protect all black anodized parts).
The shiny aluminum in clean areas must then be "primed" with 3 coats of an aluminum primer (available at auto parts store). Our touch-up paint is a polyurethane; apply at least 2 coats. The color matches our original powder epoxy, but the epoxy gets lighter (and loses its shine) after a year in sunlight so our paint will not match the color of an older stand. We recommend that you use a good quality automotive paint and its primer for larger areas.
If you plan to do a complete refinish, do not disassemble the ladder assembly. Protect all black anodized pieces e.g. hinges; fulcrum parts can be removed (do NOT remove the tracks).
